PREP ROUNDUP : Akau Pitches Two-Hitter in Buena Park Softball Victory

Shannon Akau pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Buena Park High School to a 4-0 Freeway League softball victory Tuesday at Sunny Hills.

Akau (13-1) has only allowed two runs--one earned--all season. In the fourth inning, Akau singled and scored on Kari Escobedo’s two-run home run. Buena Park (13-1-1, 5-0) finished the first half of the league season in first place.

In Century League softball:

Villa Park 7, Santa Ana Valley 1--Tiffany Franco went two for three with an RBI for visiting Villa Park (10-8-1, 5-0). All the runs scored in the game were unearned.

Foothill 5, Santa Ana 0--Leeann Gonzalez (8-5) pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for host Foothill (14-8, 4-0).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 4, Katella 1--Beth Howard (15-2) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for visiting Cypress (19-4, 5-0).

Los Alamitos 3, Esperanza 1--Shannon Skoglund (8-1) pitched a four-hitter for host Los Alamitos (14-6, 4-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, Los Amigos 2--Stephanie Smith (17-3-1) allowed three hits, striking out eight, but gave up her first two earned runs of the season in the sixth for host Garden Grove (17-3-1, 8-0-1).

La Quinta 4, Rancho Alamitos 0--La Quinta (9-8, 6-3) scored two unearned runs in each of the third and fourth innings at Rancho Alamitos.

Kennedy 9, Bolsa Grande 1--Cheryl Longeway (13-2-1), who pitched 5 1/3 innings, had nine strikeouts and allowed one hit and five walks for visiting Kennedy (17-2-1, 8-0-1).

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 10, Valley Christian 8--Trailing 8-7 in the fifth inning, Whittier Christian scored three runs on three consecutive squeeze plays and the Heralds (10-5, 5-3) became the first team to defeat Valley Christian (11-5, 8-1) in league play this season.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 7, Costa Mesa 0-Wendy Pike pitched a one-hitter to lead host Trabuco Hills (16-6, 5-0). Pike (5-1), who struck out three, gave up a single in the fifth.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 1, Ocean View 0 (eight innings)--With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Annie Presutti singled over the left fielder’s head to score Christa Yorke for Marina (19-5, 4-1). Janet Miyahara (11-1) pitched a one-hitter, her third of the season, striking out 11 and only allowing a single by Marla Pickard in the seventh.

Fountain Valley 6, Huntington Beach 0--Jennifer Allchin scored two runs and drove in the first run in a four-run third inning for host Fountain Valley (17-4, 5-0). Rae Rice struck out 10 and allowed three hits for Fountain Valley.

In Freeway League boys’ tennis:

Sunny Hills 15, Fullerton 3--Freshman Davey Robbins swept his sets in singles, 7-5, 6-0, 6-1, for host Sunny Hills (16-1, 8-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 12, Costa Mesa 6--Lee Kirner, Laguna Beach’s No. 2 singles player, swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the visiting Artists (12-4, 6-1).

In the Sea View League:

University 13, Saddleback 5--The doubles team of Randy Mancherian and David German swept, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, for host University (11-3, 7-1).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 10, Huntington Beach 8--Eddie Weiss swept his singles sets (6-4, 6-2, 6-2) for visiting Fountain Valley, which finished league play in first place with a 10-0 record.

Huntington Beach (13-5, 6-4) finished third.

In Sea View League golf:

Estancia 431, Newport Harbor 451 (18 holes)--Austin Maki shot four-over-par 75 for Estancia (12-1, 7-0) at Newport Beach Country Club.

In nonleague golf:

Estancia 416, Dana Hills 419 (18 holes)--Estancia, the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section southern region coaches’ poll, split its squad and defeated No. 3 Dana Hills in a match started at Mesa Verde in February and completed Tuesday at El Niguel. Paul Hinkle of Estancia and Scott Richardson of Dana Hills each shot six-over 78.

In Sea View League volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Tustin 2--Ian Juberg and Mark McAnlif each had 11 kills as visiting Newport Harbor (6-5, 5-2) won, 15-7, 15-7, 8-15, 13-15, 15-1.

University 3, Estancia 1--Martin Wagner had nine kills and seven stuff blocks as host University (9-2, 6-1) won, 10-15, 15-10, 15-2, 15-5.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Mission Viejo 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Greg Amaya had 16 kills and seven blocks for host Mission Viejo (5-6, 3-4) in a 15-3, 15-6, 8-15, 15-10 victory.
