NOTEBOOK : Colts Select Area Products Grant, Schultz

The Indianapolis Colts selected two former Glendale-area players in the NFL draft this week.

Stanford defensive back Alan Grant, who played at St. Francis High, and USC offensive lineman Bill Schultz, a former junior college All-American at Glendale College, were taken in the fourth round by Indianapolis.

CS Fullerton running back Michael Pringle, who attended but never played at Glendale, was taken by Atlanta in the sixth round.

Special competition: More than 350 athletes from the San Gabriel Valley will participate in a Special Olympics regional qualifying meet Saturday at Occidental. The competition will include track and field, swimming, soccer, basketball, weightlifting and gymnastics. Participants can advance to the state meet at UCLA this summer.

On the road: Driver David Kudrave of La Canada finished 10th in the 100-mile American Racing Series event at Long Beach on Sunday, winning $1,400.

Kudrave, 24, was competing in the first of 14 ARS events, which are contested in Wildcat V-6 Buicks with 450-horsepower engines.

Chuck Kendall of La Canada drove a Ford Mustang to a fifth-place finish in the IMSA GT race Saturday and collected $2,500.

On track: Glendale (10-1), which has won 14 Western State Conference track titles in 15 years, is in second place in the men’s division, behind Bakersfield, entering the conference finals Friday. The Glendale women (7-2) trail Moorpark (9-0) and Bakersfield (8-1). Results from the finals and head-to-head competition determine the conference champion.

On track II: The Occidental track team defeated Whittier last Saturday to conclude its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule at 6-0.

The Tigers, under Coach Bill Harvey, can clinch the SCIAC title by sweeping the conference championship meet that begins Friday at Redlands.
