SDSU-BYU Moved to Sept. 22
San Diego State’s Western Athletic Conference football game against Brigham Young in Provo, Utah, has been moved to Sept. 22 to accommodate CBS, which will broadcast the game to part of the country. Kickoff will be 11:30 a.m.
The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 20, but Fred Miller, SDSU athletic director, said CBS convinced the schools to make the switch so it could showcase quarterbacks Dan McGwire of SDSU and Ty Detmer of BYU. Detmer was second in the nation in total offense in 1989, McGwire fifth.
The game will be the first non-cable, network television appearance for SDSU since Oct. 1, 1983, when it tied Hawaii, 27-27, on CBS.
BASEBALL
SDSU dropped a 4-2 decision to Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference game. The Cowboys scored two in the first and two in the fourth, making a loser of SDSU starter Kurt Archer (5-2). The Aztecs are 32-17, 12-5.
Mike Newby threw a four-hitter, and Rick Doane hit his 12th homer for two runs in the first inning as host University of San Diego beat No. 8 Loyola Marymount, 4-1, in a West Coast Conference game Friday.
Newby (4-0), a senior right-hander, struck out eight as USD (21-27, 14-14) snapped first-place LMU’s five-game winning streak. Loyola (37-11, 20-6) carried a .341 team batting average into the game and had won 16 of its past 17.
SOFTBALL
UCSD scored four runs with the help of doubles by Kathy Fogg, Lynn Moreno and Tracy Kehr to win the first game of a doubleheader with Cal State San Bernardino, 5-1. In the second game, CSSB’s Marnie LaFluer pitched a one-hitter in a 3-1 victory over UCSD (21-14).
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego advanced to today’s final of the Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference tournament final by defeating UC Santa Cruz, 15-12, 15-5, 15-8, in a semifinal at Santa Clara. Bryan Palmer led defending champion UCSD (9-16) with 19 kills.
MEN’S TENNIS
