Spike Lee Wins Welles Award: Spike Lee, writer-director of the controversial film “Do the Right Thing,” was named Tuesday as winner of the Orson Welles Award for Best English Language Director of 1989. Another Welles winner was Steve Soderbergh, who was named Best English Language Director of a First Film for “sex, lies and videotape.” Three Life Achievement Awards--given to directors for their entire body of work--went to Britain’s David Lean, France’s Eric Rohmer and India’s Satyajit Ray. Lee will be presented with the award at Thursday’s 9 p.m. AFIFEST showing of “The Enchantment” at the Cineplex Century Plaza.
