The Portland Trail Blazers, the San Antonio Spurs and the defending champion Detroit Pistons scored victories Tuesday to reach the second round of the NBA playoffs.

The Trail Blazers, who didn’t look good beating Dallas twice at home, were impressive at Dallas and beat the Mavericks, 106-92. The Spurs stormed into Denver to win their third in a row, 131-120. The Pistons eliminated the Indiana Pacers, 108-96.

It might have been a costly victory for the Trail Blazers, who finished the game without two starters, Buck Williams, their power forward, and Kevin Duckworth, their center.

Williams caught an elbow in the face from Dallas center James Donaldson in the first quarter. He was treated for cuts above and below his right eye and was to be evaluated by an eye specialist.

Duckworth departed in the third quarter after banging his right hand on the rim. He did not return and was to be X-rayed.

In the absence of Williams, Jerome Kersey and Terry Porter took charge for the Trail Blazers, who had played sloppily in winning the first two at home.

Kersey scored 29 points and Porter 20 to help the Trail Blazers build a 17-point lead in the third quarter.

Rolando Blackman led a Maverick rally that cut the lead to 87-85, but Kersey, Porter and Clyde Drexler helped the Trail Blazers outscore the Mavericks, 19-7.

“I don’t know when Williams will be back, and we’ll have to wait and see about Duckworth,” Portland Coach Rick Adelman said. “All I know is that our reserves came through when we needed them.

“When Dallas cut the lead to 87-85, Clyde raised his level of play and we won. He made a turnaround jumper, got fouled and made the free throw. That’s what all-pros do.”

In the second round, the Trail Blazers will play the Spurs. The Trail Blazers will have the homecourt advantage.

San Antonio 131, Denver 120--Terry Cummings scored 28 points to help the Spurs hold off a third-quarter rally by the Nuggets.

The Nuggets, trailing by 14 points early in the third quarter, went on an 11-2 run to close within 69-64.

But Cummings made five jump shots in the next 3:11 and the Spurs jumped out to a 13-point lead.

The Nuggets pulled to within three points with 1:27 left, but Cummings scored on a rebound and Willie Anderson made a three-point play to secure the victory.

Rookie David Robinson scored 26 points and had 16 rebounds. Anderson also had 26 points.

Alex English, who might have played his last game for the Nuggets, had 24 points, making 10 of 14 shots.

But Blair Rasmussen, who was the Nuggets’ leading scorer in the first two games, made only three of 14 shots and finished with 10 points.

Detroit 108, Indiana 96--At Indianapolis, Isiah Thomas had 23 points and Bill Laimbeer had 19 rebounds as the Pistons completed their three-game sweep.

After Detroit built a 15-point lead in the third quarter, Indiana came within five midway through the fourth quarter.

But Laimbeer, who scored 12 points, and Dennis Rodman each made three baskets in the stretch to keep Detroit in control.

“My job on this club is to get the rebounds,” Laimbeer said. “What it did tonight was enable us to get out on the fast break.”

The Pistons, who swept the Lakers in the final round last season to win their first championship, have won 10 playoff games in a row.

Milwaukee 119, Chicago 112--Alvin Robertson had 38 points and the Bucks overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win at home and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Michael Jordan had eight of his 48 points in a 16-3 run to start the fourth quarter that put the Bulls ahead, 101-93.

With the Bulls leading, 107-105, Robertson tied it with a jump shot. Brad Lohaus knocked the ball away from Jordan and scored on a dunk with 1:56 left to put Milwaukee ahead, 109-107.

Fred Roberts made two free throws after a Jordan miss and Jack Sikma ruined the Bulls’ hopes with a three-point basket.

Game 4 will be played Thursday night at Milwaukee.

Cleveland 122, Philadelphia 95--After leading by 13 points at halftime, the Cavaliers broke it open with a 22-4 run led by Craig Ehlo.

The 76ers cut the lead to nine, but after Charles Barkley picked up a technical foul when he protested a call, the Cavaliers put away the game.

In the first two playoff games, won by Philadelphia, Ehlo was six for 26. But he hit five baskets in a row in the run that gave Cleveland an 83-56 lead.

“Any time you’ve missed as many shots as I had, you need to get something in close,” said Ehlo, who started his streak with a short jump shot, a dunk and a layup. “Tonight, I just relaxed and played better.”

Barkley, who averaged 35 points in the first two games, scored 17 points. He left the game with 4:42 remaining in the third quarter.

“I didn’t play well, and when I don’t play well, we don’t play well,” Barkley said.

Ehlo finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. The margin of victory was Cleveland’s largest in a playoff game.

Larry Nance scored 17 for Cleveland, 10 of them as the Caviliers built a 32-15 lead. The Sixers shot 26% from the field in the first quarter and never fully recovered.

“That shows you what we knew all along: The Cavaliers are very, very good,” Philadelphia Coach Jim Lynam said. “We have to be at the top of our game.”

Game 4 of the series is Thursday at Richfield, Ohio.

Hersey Hawkins led Philadelphia with 19 points.
