COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Moorpark Beats Valley to Win 4th Consecutive Softball Title

Robin Thomas gave up two hits, struck out six and walked three Tuesday to lead visiting Moorpark College (26-9, 13-1 in conference play) to a 19-1 win over Valley and to its fourth consecutive Western State Conference softball championship.

It is the sixth league championship in seven years for Moorpark.

Audra Olive had two hits, scored three runs and had three runs batted in, Melissa Maples was two for three and scored two runs, and Missy Cress had two hits, scored two runs and had three RBIs for Moorpark.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 5, Christ College 0--Kevin O’Neill scattered five hits and earned a complete-game victory as Cal Lutheran shut out Christ College in an NAIA District 3 baseball game at Cal Lutheran.

The win ensures that the Kingsmen (26-11, 11-7 in District 3 play) will be seeded third in the district playoffs May 10-12 at Azusa Pacific.

O’Neill, a senior left-hander who struck out seven and walked five, got Cal Lutheran out of a jam in the fourth.

Christ College (21-25, 7-13) had loaded the bases with one out, but O’Neill retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a groundout.

Cal Lutheran’s Dave Leonhardt went four for five, his fourth consecutive multiple-hit game. Teammates Tim Lewis and Blake Babki each had two hits.

Antelope Valley 6, Desert 5--Tim Johnson recorded his first save after retiring Desert on a game-ending double play in the Foothill Conference game at Antelope Valley.

Steve Medina (4-4) struck out six and walked four in 8 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Steve Lasagna’s two-run home run in the first inning gave Antelope Valley (10-26, 5-15) a 2-0 lead. Brent Newcomb hit a solo home run for Antelope Valley.
