Dinner Nets $18,000 for Youth Club

Boys and Girls Club of Whittier received $18,000, the net proceeds raised at “An Evening With Lee,” a black-tie testimonial dinner held March 22 at the Whittier Hilton Hotel. Lee Owens was honored for his 22 years of service as a board member and for serving as chairman of the board for 15 years. Gala chair was Jaclyn Tilley Hill.

* Los Angeles Urban League held its Whitney M. Young Award dinner April 3 at the Century Plaza Hotel. The event netted $405,359, which will be used to help fund the ongoing programs of the league, including its Family Literacy Center, Data Processing Center and Employment Services departments, and other community services.

* FOCUS (Families Opposed to Chemical Urban Spraying) netted more than $5,000 April 19 at Second City Theatre’s benefit performance of “Lord of the Medflies.” Funds will go toward legal and office expenses of the umbrella group of malathion opponents headed by Adelaide Nimitz, president.

* The 1990 Arthritis Foundation Telethon held April 22 raised a total of $1,309,465 in area contributions and pledges, announced Christi Sulzbach, chairman, Telethon Committee of Southern California. The telethon was broadcast by KCOP-TV, Channel 13, part of a TV network of stations across the United States. Funds will be used to continue to provide additional education, services and research into rheumatic diseases.

* John Tracy Clinic Desert Friends received a $10,000 donation from the Mary Pickford Foundation from proceeds raised at the foundation’s annual golf tournament April 23. The clinic, founded in 1942 by the late Louise Tracy, will use the money for general support for preschool hearing-impaired children and their families.

* City of Hope Esperanza Ball April 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel was attended by more than 600 guests. The event was sponsored by Founders for Diabetic Research in association with the City of Hope’s National Medical Center and netted $125,000.
