The 1989 Sea World Holiday Bowl generated $11.4 million for the community, according to a report issued to the city council by bowl officials. The figure was arrived at by a survey conducted by CIC Research, which also found that 21,500 tourists came to San Diego because of the game, won by Penn State, 50-39, over Brigham Young.

BASEBALL

Rick Navarro pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine as San Diego State defeated cross-town rival USD, 3-1, in a nonconference game at SDSU’s Smith Field.

It was the first game Navarro (8-3) has pitched in three weeks. Showing no signs of a hyper-extended left elbow which kept him out of the lineup, Navarro struck out the side in the first and lowered his ERA to 2.48.
