A bicyclist was struck and killed by a Jeep on busy Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Coroner’s officials identified the cyclist as Jairo Samir Zuleta, 26, but were trying to determine where he resided.

CHP Officer Lyle Whitten said Zuleta was riding a green 10-speed bicycle when he was struck on the highway at 8th Street about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead about an hour later at Humana Hospital-Huntington Beach, Whitten said.

Whitten said Zuleta was riding north on the right edge of Pacific Coast Highway before he veered across two lanes and was hit by a Jeep driven by a Newport Beach man.

Zuleta, who was wearing only black-and-white racing shorts, was thrown to the ground and suffered massive head injuries. No citations have been issued and an investigation is under way, Whitten said.
