CBS Dominates Daytime Emmy Field With 74 Nominations : Television: The networks’ order in nominations mirrored their daytime ratings. ABC got 39; NBC took 30.

CBS, whose prime-time programming was branded a “total disaster” by chief executive Laurence Tisch on Wednesday, got a boost Thursday from its daytime lineup, which dominated the nominations for the 17th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. CBS garnered 74 of the 205 nominations--more than ABC and NBC combined.

CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” this season’s highest-rated daytime program, and its “Guiding Light” topped the list of multiple nominees with 14 mentions each--including in the best soap opera category. ABC’s “All My Children” had 13 and CBS’ children’s series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” followed with 12.

ABC programs collected 39 nominations while NBC’s got 30.

The networks’ order in nominations mirrored their daytime ratings. Since last September, CBS has averaged a 5.6 rating in daytime, compared to 5.1 for ABC and 3.7 for NBC (with each point representing 921,000 homes). Six of the Top 10 daytime shows are on CBS.

Also nominated with “The Young and the Restless” and “Guiding Light” as best daytime soap were ABC’s “All My Children” and NBC’s “Santa Barbara,” which has won the award for the past two years.

The Emmys, covering the period between March 6, 1989, and March 5, 1990, will be announced in two installments. Winners in the creative arts areas will be unveiled at a reception June 23 in Universal City, while those in the major categories will be handed out in a ceremony that will be telecast from New York June 28 on ABC. The awards are given jointly by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in New York.

Among its 12 nominations this year, “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” got one for best children’s series, which it did not receive last year. PBS’ “Newton’s Apple,” which won in that category last year, did not get nominated this time out. But four other PBS programs did: “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” “Reading Rainbow,” “Sesame Street” and “Captain Kangaroo.”

Cable shows accounted for four of the 205 total nominations, with the Disney Channel getting two and HBO and MTV earning one each. PBS and syndicated shows earned 29 nominations each.
