Local firehouses will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in observation of Fire Service Recognition Day. Visitors are invited to meet firefighters, receive information on fire safety and earthquake preparedness and view fire equipment.

Special activities are planned at two Torrance fire stations. Station 1, at 1701 Crenshaw Blvd., will have displays of the latest hazardous-material equipment and other special fire service programs. Station 2, at 25135 Douglas Way, the location of the airport training tower, will feature live-action displays of firefighters climbing ladders, using the “jaws of life” to cut open cars and operating the aerial ladder truck. The display will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Los Angeles County Fire Museum, at 1320 N. Eastern Ave., Los Angeles, also will participate in Fire Service Day with displays of antique fire apparatus and equipment.
