Series on South Africa Sheds Some New Light on Dark Spot in World
Congratulations to Julie Cart for once again writing an excellent profile of runner Zola Budd (May 7). Cart’s piece was every bit as moving as the feature she did on Budd on April 20, 1988.
Zola Budd was thrown into the world of politics when all she wanted to do was run, and at the age of 23 has demonstrated a wonderful capacity to forgive her transgressors: a dead father, an ex-coach, countless detractors and the International Amateur Athletic Federation. I hope that she will be allowed to continue to live in peace with her husband and animals in her homeland, and that South Africa’s black majority will soon be her citizen equals.
