L.A. Marathon Runner-Up Fails Drug Test

INDIANAPOLIS —
A Soviet athlete who finished second in the women’s division of the Los Angeles Marathon this spring has tested positive for steroid use and will be suspended from competition in the United States for two years, The Athletics Congress announced today.
Sirje Eichelman tested positive for nandrolone metabolites, a substance banned by the International Amateur Athletic Federation and International Olympic Committee.
TAC, the U.S. track and field governing body, notified the directors of the marathon, the Soviet federation and the IAAF of the disqualification.
