South Gate has been selected as one of 30 finalists for the 1990 All-America City Award from the National Civic League.
Ten communities will be selected from the finalists on June 9 at an awards banquet in Phoenix. Other California cities among the finalists are Bakersfield and San Francisco.
Each year, the league honors communities that have brought government, business and residents together to try to solve major issues.
Several local programs including the South Gate Commission on Youth, which sponsored anti-gang and anti-drug marches, and the Redevelopment Agency’s commercial and residential rehabilitation projects were submitted as accomplishments to merit the award, City Information Manager Maureen O’Connor said.
