Police are asking the public for assistance in locating a robber who beat a 91-year-old woman in East San Diego.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said that Margaret Grant was asleep in her home in the 3700 block of Van Dyke Avenue on Sunday when a man entered her room sometime after 7 p.m.

“He lifted up the mattress and kept hitting her,” said Frances (Fay) Lowry, 64, the victim’s best friend. “When she screamed, ‘Get out! Get out!’ he put a pillow over her face. After he left, she said she screamed about four hours for help.”

Lowry said that the thief took at least $250 that the victim had hidden among bills in a desk drawer in the dining room.

Lowry found Grant on Monday when she arrived to take her to the doctor. Grant was released Wednesday from Villa View Community Hospital, and is in good condition at a nursing facility, where she is recuperating.
