Candaele Sets Two Records at Section Meet

Coley Candaele of Carpinteria set 1-A Division records in winning the 800- and 1,600-meter runs for the third consecutive year in the Southern Section high school track meet Friday at Cerritos College.

The top nine boys’ and girls’ overall finishers in each event advance to next Friday’s Masters’ meet.

Candaele was the top qualifier in the 800 meters, with a time of 1:50.87, and the 1,600 meters in 4:06.58--the best time in the nation this season.

Because of the lateness of the meet, team titles will not be decided until Tuesday, when the triple jump competition is completed.

In the girls’ competition, Inger Miller of Muir won the 4-A Division’s 100 and 200 meters and anchored the Mustangs’ winning 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Marion Jones of Oxnard Rio Mesa won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored Rio Mesa’s winning 400-meter relay and second-place 1,600-meter relay teams in the 3-A Division. Kim Toney of Atascadero, the defending state 800-meter champion, won the 400 and 800 meters, finished third in the 200 meters and anchored Atascadero’s winning 1,600-meter relay team in the 1-A Division.

Twila Sims of Lompoc won the 2-A 100 and 300-meter low hurdles, and Shelly Taylor of Huntington Beach Edison won the 4-A 800 and 1,600 meters. Latima Jones of Long Beach St. Anthony won the 2-A 200 and 400 meters.
