Coley Candaele of Carpinteria set 1-A Division records in winning the 800- and 1,600-meter runs for the third consecutive year in the Southern Section high school track meet Friday at Cerritos College.

The top nine boys’ and girls’ overall finishers in each event advance to next Friday’s Masters’ meet.

Candaele was the top qualifier in the 800 meters, with a time of 1:50.87, and the 1,600 meters in 4:06.58--the best time in the nation this season.

Because of the lateness of the meet, team titles will not be decided until Tuesday, when the triple jump competition is completed.

Kim Toney of Atascadero, the defending state 800-meter champion, won the 400 and 800 meters, finished third in the 200 meters and anchored Atascadero’s winning 1,600-meter relay team in the 1-A Division.
