A 19-year-old Anaheim man who was fatally shot while driving his pickup truck in Placentia may have been the victim of a gang-related shooting, police said today.

Victor Hernandez died at UCI Medical Center in Orange at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, about five hours after he was shot in the head near the intersection of Melrose Street and Orangethorpe Avenue.

A 15-year-old who was in Hernandez’s truck suffered minor gunshot wounds. He was treated at the Placentia Linda Hospital and released.

Placentia Detective Jerry Zamora said motorists from another vehicle apparently fired several shots at Hernandez, who was heading south on Melrose.

The shooting “is more than likely to be gang-related,” Zamora said.

Hernandez’s death may be the 19th gang-related killing in Orange County this year, surpassing the number of gang-related killings recorded for all of 1989.
