Fire caused $35,000 damage to a single-family house in El Rio on Tuesday and left a family of six homeless, authorities said.
The fire started at 9:48 a.m. when combustibles, possibly rags or clothes, were left too close to a water heater in the garage of the house at 3712 Santa Clara Ave., said Vicki Crabtree, a Ventura County fire dispatcher.
Flames and smoke caused $25,000 damage to the structure and $10,000 damage to the contents, she said.
