Mira Costa Plays Edison for 4-A Volleyball Title

An unbeaten season, a Southern Section championship and a mythical national title will be on the line for the Mira Costa High boys’ volleyball team at 7:30 Saturday night, when the Mustangs meet Edison of Huntington Beach in the 4-A Division final at Marina High in Huntington Beach.

Top-seeded Mira Costa (21-0), ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today and Volleyball Monthly, will be trying to win its second Southern Section title. The Mustangs completed a 22-0 season in 1984 with a victory over Estancia of Costa Mesa.

Since then they have lost twice in Southern Section finals (1987 and ‘89).

Second-seeded Edison gave Mira Costa its toughest match of the season before the Mustangs won a five-game decision at Edison. The Chargers, led by setter Aaron Boone, advanced to the finals with a 13-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-9, 15-13, victory Tuesday over Santa Barbara.

Mira Costa, which has four players who have signed with major colleges--setter Canyon Ceman (Stanford), middle blockers Pat Ivie and Mike Ashenfelter (USC) and outside hitter David Swatik (UCLA)--has not lost a game in the playoffs and beat San Marcos of Santa Barbara, 15-4, 15-2, 15-9, Tuesday.
