Fourteen-year-old Jennifer Capriati won a baseline battle with fourth-ranked Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain for the second time as a professional, 6-3, 6-3, but Conchita Martinez gave Spain a 3-2 victory over the United States in the Nation’s Cup in Marbella, Spain, Saturday.
Martinez breezed past Lori McNeil, 6-1, 6-1, in 53 minutes in the deciding match.
Capriati, playing in only her fifth professional tournament, had gained the United States a 2-2 tie when she overpowered Sanchez Vicario, 18, in the day’s opening match.
The two teen-agers could meet again in the third round next week in the French Open, which Sanchez Vicario won a year ago, beating Steffi Graf.
Refusing to be unnerved by a loud, partisan Spanish crowd, Capriati, after losing the first game to service in the second set, won the next five games.
Goran Prpic upset Stefan Edberg, 6-1, 6-4, to lead Yugoslavia to a 2-1 victory over Sweden and a berth in the finals against the United States in the $1.3-million ATP World Cup in Dusseldorf, West Germany.
Prpic, after beating Edberg, teamed with Goran Ivanisevic to defeat Edberg and Magnus Gustafsson, 6-4, 6-2.
