Share

Police said Tuesday that it appears the drowning of a 8-month-old girl in a bathtub Monday night was accidental, but the investigation into her death remains open.

Susie Aguiniga was taking a bath with her 2-year-old brother in their home in the 15600 block of Williams Street when the children’s mother left them alone for a few minutes, according to police.

“When the mother returned, the child was face up in the water and appeared to be dead,” Sgt. Mike Shanahan said.

Police said the mother, Diega Aguiniga, tried to revive the infant and called paramedics, who also tried to revive the child. The infant was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Healthcare Medical Center of Tustin at about 8:15 p.m., Shanahan said.

Since the beginning of the year, five children have drowned in swimming pools or hot tubs in Orange County. Drowning is said to be the leading cause of death in the county among children under age 5.
