Ettore Scola’s stunning 1977 film of strong contemporary implications is in the grand traditional style of solid construction and well-wrought characterizations carried off by authentic stars. It teams Sophia Loren as a weary, oppressed Roman housewife and mother of six and Marcello Mastroianni as a homosexual threatened with imminent deportation to a concentration camp. They meet during Hitler’s triumphant procession through Rome on May 6, 1938.
