A Calexico man shot and killed one of two men who tried to rob him in the parking lot of a Clairemont Motel 6 Wednesday night, police said.
Richard Thompson, 59, shot one of the men with a pistol shortly after 9 p.m. The dead man had not been identified Thursday. The other fled on foot south on Interstate 805.
Police spokesman Bill Robinson said two men, wearing stocking masks, approached Thompson, who had parked at the back of the motel complex at the 5500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
Robinson said Thompson has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He said the two men demanded Thompson’s money and wallet. Thompson struggled one man, drawing his gun and firing a shot during the struggle.
Police said the dead man appears to be in his 20s. He was dressed in a long-sleeve black pullover sweater, light-blue denim pants and black shoes.
Thompson was interviewed by homicide officers and released. The investigation is continuing, police said.
