THE SIDELINES : Sacramento to Get Pro Football
Sacramento, which didn’t get the Raiders, is the sixth city chosen for the new World League of American Football, league officials announced today.
The spring league, scheduled to begin play in March, 1991, will have 12 teams.
Gregg Lukenbill of the Sacramento Sports Assn. said the eventual owners of the new team, who will pay a $10-million franchise fee to the league, will choose a name.
The new team will play its first year in the 23,000-seat Hughes Stadium near Sacramento City College then move into the 50,000-seat stadium that Lukenbill is building that is scheduled for completion in 1992.
The previous five cities announced for the league are Orlando, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; San Antonio; Montreal, Canada, and Barcelona, Spain.
Schramm said six more cities will be named soon. He said two will be in the United States.
