HUNTINGTON BEACH : Car Show to Benefit Library Expansion

Share

A car show to benefit the planned children’s wing of the Huntington Central Library will be held Sunday in Huntington Central Park.

The fifth annual Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance, featuring more than 200 cars ranging from Ford Model A’s to a Lamborghini Countach, is expected to raise about $20,000 for the 50,000-square-foot library expansion, said Bob Wood, co-chairman of the committee sponsoring the event.

The 12-member organizing committee is made up of car enthusiasts who work or live in Huntington Beach.

Last year’s show, which displayed 116 cars, contributed about $6,000 to the children’s wing fund, Wood said. A contribution from Chevrolet is expected to total more than half of this year’s proceeds, he said.

The city, through reallocating funds and private donations, already has the $5 million needed to add to the library children’s wing, Library Director Ron Hayden said.

Money from fund-raisers such as Sunday’s car show will go toward the $120,000 needed for books, computers and other supplies, Hayden said.

The show, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the area of the park north of the library, will include a collection of 98 Corvettes with models from each year since the car was introduced in 1953, Wood said. Admission is $7 for adults and free for children under 12.
