‘Suicide Machine’ User Planned Own Memorial

PORTLAND, Ore. —
Friends of Portland Community College teacher Janet E. Adkins gathered Sunday to say farewell to the woman, who chose to die connected to a “suicide machine” because she had Alzheimer’s disease.
Before she died last week, Adkins, 54, had planned her own memorial service at the First Unitarian Church, which included a string quartet playing selections of her favorite music.
