Hoover Sprinter Dies From Injuries Sustained in Crash
Felix Shen, a sprinter on the Hoover High track team, died late last Friday night when a car in which he was a passenger slammed into a Rapid Transit District bus on Canada Boulevard in Glendale.
Shen, 17, died from multiple traumatic injuries, according to Bob Dambacher of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Firefighters needed the Jaws of Life to extract Shen’s body from the back seat of the 1981 Ford Escort.
The vehicle, driven by teammate Ben Marckmann, 17, was estimated to be traveling at 65 m.p.h., according to a report filed with the Glendale Police Department.
The car, heading south on Canada, lost traction when Marckmann failed to negotiate a turn near Willow Drive, the report said, and the vehicle crossed the double-yellow line before skidding into a northbound RTD bus.
Both Marckmann and teammate Marcus Carr were thrown from the vehicle. Marckmann suffered a broken sternum and Carr sustained a shattered right arm.
The district attorney’s office in Pasadena will seek a manslaughter charge against Marckmann, according to Glendale police.
Shen had posted bests of 11.9 seconds for 100 meters and 19 feet 4 inches in the long jump.
