Four firefighters and two police officers were treated for injuries after a fire at a Ventura plating company sent a cloud of smelly smoke over much of the area Sunday.

A nearby miniature golf course was closed by the smoke.

The injured were not identified, and their conditions were not immediately available last night.

The blaze at Janus Enterprises, 2114 Palma Drive was reported at 6:45 p.m., Ventura Police Officer Bonnie Lucking said. Flames were coming from the roof of the single-story building.

“This cloud of smoke is bothering a lot of people in the area,” Lucking said.

It was unknown what type of toxic materials, if any, were inside the building.

Ventura County hazardous materials unit were called to the scene and were expected to remain through the night. Officials from the state Department of Fish and Game also were expected at the scene.

Smoke that was noticed as far away as Santa Paula forced the closure of nearby Golf N Stuff, Lucking said.
