SIMI VALLEY : Expansion of Senior Center Supported
- Share via
The Simi Valley Planning Commission unanimously recommended Wednesday that the City Council approve plans to expand the Senior Citizens Center to provide more services for the elderly.
The proposal calls for a 4,000-square-foot expansion of the center in the 3900 block of East Avenida Simi.
The estimated cost of the expansion is about $500,000, which would come from community development funds, said Brian Gabler, assistant to the city manager.
Since the center opened in 1984, there has been a substantial increase in the number of seniors using the facility, said Judy Collins, the center’s senior services coordinator.
Collins said about 250 seniors participate in various educational and social activities at the center daily.
She said the expansion would include space for four classrooms to be used for activities such as oil painting and woodcarving. She said new restrooms are planned.
The City Council will make the final decision on the proposal at its meeting July 23.
