The school board has given permission to hold bingo games on high school campuses in the Garden Grove Unified School District.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday night to give final approval to a new district policy permitting parent groups and booster clubs to hold bingo games on campus as fund-raisers.

“I’m voting to approve this,” said board member Lynn T. Hamtil, “because I believe these people deserve a chance to see if they can do it. But if they deviate (from the district policy) to the left or the right, I will probably be the first board member to take action.’

Kenneth H. Slimmer, another board member, warned: “There’s a tremendous liability in this. One person has to take the responsibility for each game. It’s an individual liability, not corporate. I don’t know where you’re going to find someone to sign up for that.”

The bingo issue in Garden Grove arose earlier this year when parent groups asked the City Council to amend its bingo ordinance to allow games to be held at the high schools. The council approved the measure in January, and the board’s decision clears the way for the games to begin.

In addition to five high schools in Garden Grove, the district includes La Quinta High School in Westminster and Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley.
