Mayor A.B. (Buck) Catlin, 71, was listed in fair condition Friday after a Thursday afternoon bodysurfing accident in Laguna Beach.

Catlin was pulled to the shore by beach-goers and lifeguards at about 3 p.m., Laguna Beach Fire Department officials said. He was admitted to the intensive-care unit at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, where he underwent tests Friday to determine the seriousness of his injuries.

Although doctors were uncertain as to Catlin’s injuries, he is alert and his condition is stable, said Susie Fitch, an intensive-care nurse.

His wife, Bobbie, and other family members have been visiting him at the hospital, Fitch said.

Catlin and his wife had gone to the Surf & Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach to celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary, their daughter, Janny Catlin, said from the hospital.

“Dad has always been active in the water and a regular bodysurfer,” she said. “I guess he got a bad wave.”

But his injuries have not affected his sense of humor, she said, adding that he has been on the telephone to City Hall to keep up with business.

Catlin, who has also been a Navy submarine commander and a Fullerton College professor, is a trim and active grandfather of three. He has been a member of the City Council since 1982 and is a 43-year resident of Fullerton.
