An unidentified gunman died Tuesday after he was wounded in a furious shootout with a Brinks armored car guard outside a downtown Los Angeles bank.

The guard and several bystanders were unhurt in the gun battle that began at about 10:45 a.m. in the lobby of the City National Bank at 6th and Olive streets and continued into the street outside. The wounded robbery suspect fled out a door shattered by gunfire and fired more shots before collapsing on the sidewalk. He was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he died.

Police, who declined to release the name of the Brinks guard, were trying to identify the robbery suspect.

Officers said they were uncertain how many shots had been fired. They said the guard fired at least five shots and the gunman at least two. At least two shots fired by the guard struck the suspect, witnesses said.

The incident was at least the 20th armored-car robbery attempt since 1988 in the Los Angeles area.
