LA HABRA : City Seeks Answer to Mess of Signs

Share

Calling a proposed new sign ordinance too restrictive, the City Council has asked City Atty. Richard Jones to come up with alternatives that would keep the city clean while allowing residents to continue posting signs for garage sales and other events.

The proposed measure would have imposed fines on those who post signs on the streets but fail to remove them within a reasonable period of time.

Mayor Beth Graham said the plan restricted the places where people may post signs and she feared that it could penalize those who obey the law.

“Some people are fastidious about removing their signs and I don’t want to penalize these people,” she said.

Councilman William D. Mahoney said the purpose of any new ordinance should be to make sure signs are removed after they have served their purpose, not to keep people from putting them up.

Mahoney said he wants to “penalize those people who are not good citizens and who leave all that junk up where we have to look at it.”
