THE SIDELINES : Red Wings Sign Goalie Chevrier
The Detroit Red Wings announced today they’ve signed free-agent goalie Alain Chevrier, who spent last season with the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Chevrier, 29, was signed to a one-year contract, said General Manager Jimmy Devellano. No compensation was required for the signing.
“We feel with the addition of Alain Chevrier, that the Red Wings will have added depth to our goal-tending,” Devellano said. “Alain will compete against Glen Hanlon, Greg Stefan, Tim Cheveldae, Scott King and Dave Gagnon at training camp for a job here in Detroit.”
Last season, Chevrier played 39 games with Chicago, earning a 16-14-3 record and a 4.18 goals against average. He was traded to Pittsburgh on March 6 for an undisclosed draft choice. In three regular season games with the Penguins, Chevrier had a 1-2-0 mark with a 5.06 goals against average.
Chevrier, a native of Cornwall, Ontario, played four years of college hockey at Miami of Ohio.
