The San Gabriel City Council voted 4 to 1 to approve David A. Lawton as the city’s new police chief.

A 13-year veteran of the department, Lawton, 36, had served as acting chief since the May retirement of Donald S. Tutich.

Lawton, a 1981 graduate of Cal State Los Angeles, will be paid a $61,000 salary. He will oversee a 65-member department in the city of 35,000.

Councilman John Tapp, who cast the dissenting vote at Tuesday’s council meeting, said he regretted the council was presented with only one candidate.
