More On-Ramps to 101 Expected to Be Reopened

Motorists on the Harbor and Pasadena freeways were to receive a commuting break today with the expected opening of on-ramps to the beleaguered Hollywood Freeway through downtown, where travel has been restored in stages since last week’s subway tunnel fire.

Caltrans officials said the northbound lanes of the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. 101) opened to truckers Wednesday evening for the first time since Friday’s fire temporarily shut down the freeway section known as “the slot.”

Trucks still are barred from the southbound Hollywood Freeway. The on-ramp from the southbound Pasadena Freeway to the Hollywood reopened Wednesday afternoon. Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli said the northbound Harbor Freeway connection was to reopen at 5 a.m. today.

The Vignes Street freeway off-ramp was reopened at 5 p.m. Wednesday. But both the north and southbound Vignes Street on-ramps remained closed, Caltrans said. Traffic also is barred from the outermost lane of the southbound Hollywood Freeway while workers reinforce the ground below.
