MORALS 1A: Two dozen professors from Chinese universities are in Irvine to hear UCI professor John Whiteley lecture on his specialty: the relationship of moral reasoning to moral action. The lecture was arranged before the crackdown on Chinese intellectuals that began last year, and Whiteley says he has “absolutely no idea” how the workshop will go. . . . He will speak through a translator, but the differences in culture may be insurmountable, he says. “Some of my finest examples are from ‘The Maltese Falcon.’ ”
