Tournament Will Begin Today at UCLA
Is this week’s Volvo/Los Angeles tournament the finest money can buy?
For the first time, appearance fees are being legitimately paid to players to appear in such events as Volvo/Los Angeles, a World Series level tournament on the IBM/ATP Tour.
In Championship Series tournaments--events given greater importance on the tour--players are designated to play, unlike the World Series stops.
That means the big winners in this week’s tournament at the L.A. Tennis Center at UCLA are Stefan Edberg, Aaron Krickstein and Michael Chang. Each received appearance fees to play.
Andre Agassi received $155,000 to play in a similar tournament in San Francisco earlier this year, but Edberg’s fee is believed to be slightly lower because it was agreed upon before Wimbledon.
Neither Edberg, Krickstein, Chang nor Pete Sampras play until Tuesday night. The top match today is Derrick Rostagno against Richey Reneberg.
