Joe Magrane scattered five hits over 7 2/3 innings and Jose Oquendo hit a two-run double in a five-run second inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 5-1, Monday in St. Louis.

Rex Hudler, a .220 hitter filling in for injured left fielder Vince Coleman, had a single, double and triple for the Cardinals, who have won 13 of their last 19 games and four of five under Manager Joe Torre.

“They’re playing aggressive and they’re having fun,” Torre said. “I really have no point of comparison because I hadn’t seen them before (last week). But they’re having fun, and that makes playing a lot easier.”

Todd Zeile opened the Cardinals’ second inning with a single off Ron Darling (4-6), Hudler doubled and Oquendo’s double drove in the tying and lead runs.

Pittsburgh 10, Philadelphia 1--In the first game of a twi-night doubleheader in Philadelphia, the Pirates’ Randy Tomlin pitched a five-hitter in his major league debut then worried about being sent back to Harrisburg of the double-A Eastern League.

Manager Jim Leyland said he wasn’t sure what he would do with the 24-year-old left-hander.

“I’m not going to rush my decision, not get emotional,” Leyland said. “His mission was accomplished. I don’t know if he’ll be here tomorrow.”

Tomlin, who struck out six, walked two and hit a batter, came within one out of a shutout.

Carmelo Martinez’s single denied him that.

Barry Bonds hit two singles, a three-run homer and drove in a fifth run with a sacrifice fly. Bobby Bonilla, who was five for five, had an RBI single in the Pirates’ two-run first inning and a run-scoring triple in the ninth and Gary Redus homered and doubled.

Terry Mulholland (6-5) gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings.

Houston 4, San Francisco 1--Bill Gullickson pitched his first complete game in almost three years and Bill Doran hit a two-run homer to lead the Astros in Houston.

It was Houston’s fifth consecutive victory and dropped the second-place Giants five games behind idle Cincinnati in the National League West.
