The Santa Clara City Council approved a proposed regional stadium financing plan, further clearing the way for the San Francisco Giants to move. Santa Clara became the sixth city in Santa Clara County to join the drive to bring major league baseball to the area.
Voters in those cities and in unincorporated areas of the county will decide the matter on Nov. 6.
Owner Bob Lurie has promised that his team would be renamed the Santa Clara Giants once it begins playing in the proposed $152.8-million, 45,000-seat ballpark an hour south of Candlestick Park, the Giants’ home since 1960. Stadium backers say the new park near the Great America theme park could open by 1994.
