THE SIDELINES : Indians’ 1st Baseman Disabled
The Cleveland Indians have placed first baseman Keith Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 1, because of a torn left calf muscle.
The move marked the third time Hernandez has been on the list because of the injury. The Indians’ team doctors had cleared him to play last week, but he declined and asked for a second opinion.
Dr. Russell Warren, team doctor of the New York Giants, examined Hernandez last weekend and confirmed that he was still hurt.
Hernandez, 36, has not played since he reinjured the calf July 24. He is hitting .200 in 43 games this season.
The Indians signed Hernandez as a free agent during the off-season to a two-year, $3.5-million contract.
They did not immediately replace him on the roster.
