THE SIDELINES : Hungary Grand Prix Record Set
Gerhard Berger of Austria shattered the qualifying record in the opening trials today and won the provisional pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Berger’s fastest lap in his McLaren-Honda on the 2.47-mile Hungaroring circuit was 1 minute, 18.127 seconds, and was almost 1.6 seconds better than the 1:19.726 set by Riccardo Patrese of Italy last year.
Berger was among six drivers who got under the old record.
Defending champion Nigel Mansell, in a Ferrari, was second in 1:18.739 with Jean Alesi of France third in a Tyrrell-Ford.
