Gerhard Berger of Austria shattered the qualifying record in the opening trials today and won the provisional pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Berger’s fastest lap in his McLaren-Honda on the 2.47-mile Hungaroring circuit was 1 minute, 18.127 seconds, and was almost 1.6 seconds better than the 1:19.726 set by Riccardo Patrese of Italy last year.

Berger was among six drivers who got under the old record.

Defending champion Nigel Mansell, in a Ferrari, was second in 1:18.739 with Jean Alesi of France third in a Tyrrell-Ford.
