SIDELINES : Japan Beats U.S. in Volleyball

TOYAMA, Japan —
Japan defeated the United States, 15-2, 15-11, 15-9, today in the opening match of a series of three women’s volleyball matches in Japan.
Motoko Ohbayashi scored nine points for Japan while Ruth Lawanson led the American team with five.
The second match is to be held in Fukui, in northern Japan, on Saturday.
