1,500 Are Expected for Triathlon Sunday

Some of the best triathletes in the world will compete in the Bud Light Triathlon Sunday in San Clemente.

At least 1,500 professional and amateur triathletes are expected to compete in the race, which is the seventh of 11 stops on the U.S. Triathlon Series tour. The top 50 overall finishers and the top finisher in each age division will qualify for the Bud Light USTS national championship Oct. 20 in Las Vegas.

Top professionals expected to compete include two-time Hawaii Ironman winner Scott Tinley of Del Mar, Andrew Carlson of Irvine, 1988 USTS national champion Colleen Cannon of Nederland, Colo., and defending champion Paula Newby-Fraser of Encinitas.

Prize money totaling $5,000 will be awarded to the top professionals.

The race begins at 7 a.m. at the San Clemente Municipal Pier with a 1.5K ocean swim. A hilly, 40K bicycle portion follows the swim, and the final stage is a 10K run, which finishes at the San Clemente Community Center on Del Mar Avenue.
