THE SIDELINES : Martin Ups Winston Cup Lead

Mark Martin’s victory in the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan International Speedway extended his lead in the NASCAR Winston Cup standings to 48 points over second-place Dale Earnhardt.

Martin entered Sunday’s race with a nine-point lead and now has 2,854 points to 2,806 for three-time Winston Cup champion Earnhardt, who finished eighth at Michigan.

Geoff Bodine finished seventh and now trails Martin by 154 points with 2,700.

Defending Winston Cup champion Rusty Wallace is fourth in the standings with 2,579 points, followed by Morgan Shepherd, 2,491; Bill Elliott, 2,472; Kyle Petty, 2,451; Ricky Rudd, 2,410; Ken Schrader, 2,361, and Davey Allison, 2,243.

Earnhardt easily leads the circuit in money winnings with $1,210,305. Wallace is second with $642,219, followed by Martin at $637,715.
