A previously unknown work believed to be by the 16th-Century Italian artist Titian has been discovered in an art restorer’s workshop, city art officials said Monday.

The painting depicts a penitent St. Jerome and appears to be a self-portrait. It belongs to a private collector in the nearby city Treviso.

The officials said the painting was tentatively identified at a restorer’s workshop in Venice by the director of the city’s cultural heritage department.
