A Japanese student was killed when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed a street in Scripps Miramar Ranch, police said Monday.

The victim was identified as Naoko Shimazu, 20. The accident occurred in the 9800 block of Carroll Canyon Road Sunday night, said Detective Chuck Vermillion of the San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.

“She was crossing with a friend, and he got to the other side and turned around in time to see her get struck,” Vermillion said, who added that the woman was not using a crosswalk.

Shimazu, who was pronounced dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, was studying English as a second language at ES International School of English, a private school on the United States International University campus. She had just completed her two-week program Saturday, said Brigitte McCarthy, director of the school.

Police, who have no suspects, are looking for a blue car that may have front-end damage on the right side.
