Associated Press
SANTA CRUZ —
A former Santa Cruz district attorney, who disappeared in 1977 amid allegations he swindled $29,500 from clients to support his gambling, suddenly reappeared to turn himself in.
Local officials said they’re unsure where Richard J. Pease has been since the morning of July 23, 1977, when he kissed his wife, Betty, goodby and never returned.
Pease and his lawyer both refused to comment when the tanned and bald 68-year-old surrendered Tuesday at the prosecutors’ office.
