University of San Diego freshman Toby Taitano scored the game’s only goal as USD defeated UC San Diego, 1-0, in a nonconference game at USD. It was the opener for both teams.

Taitano, from Valhalla High, was assisted by Tom Crane and Chugger Adair and blasted the ball past UCSD goalie Brian Siljander. USD freshman Tom Tate, from University High, had two saves in the shutout.

HOCKEY

The San Diego Gulls signed right winger Darren Lowe, giving the International Hockey League team nine players as it prepares for its first season.

Lowe scored 31 goals and had 35 assists last year for the Flint Spirits. A 5-foot-10, 180-pound native of Toronto, he played briefly with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL during the 1983-84 season.

Gulls training camp opens Sept. 18 at the Sports Arena.

TENNIS

USD men’s tennis Coach Ed Collins earned the 1990 Volvo Tennis/Coaches Community Service Award for Region VIII, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.

Collins, who also won the award in 1988, was this year’s regional coach of the year. USD’s men’s team (22-6) finished the year ranked 12th nationally.
