Obituaries : Harold L. Hollingworth; Retired Roofer

Harold L. Hollingworth, a retired roofer who once served as chaplain of a Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge in Sun Valley, has died in Sepulveda. He was 76.

Hollingworth died Tuesday of cancer, his wife, Herma Hollingworth, said.

A native of Concordia, Kan., Hollingworth came to California at age 8 and graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1933. He retired from the city of Los Angeles as a roofer in 1980.

Hollingworth was a technical sergeant in the Army during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10040 in Sun Valley, where he was chaplain from 1987 to 1989. He also was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge No. 1539 in San Fernando and played on both clubs’ bowling leagues.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a stepson, Charles Austin of Encinitas; a stepdaughter, Mae Wincote of Oceanside; a sister, Mae Crouthers of Canyon Country; a stepbrother, Sy Sandian of Canyon Country; and two granddaughters.

A funeral service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary, 10621 Victory Blvd., in North Hollywood. Burial, complete with a 21-gun salute by the VFW, will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park. Donations can be made in Hollingworth’s name to the American Cancer Society.
